Remarks George was born in Cassville, New Jersey. 
From a letter from his mother:
"On April 9, 1942 while abandoning Bataan in small boats going to Corregidor (P.I.) a heavy explosion threw large boulders out into Marviveles Bay as the evacuation boats were leaving. One large boulder struck a boat, killed three men and one officer and broke the boat in half.  Phifer was one of the men killed."
