The following men were lost while serving on USS Dorado (SS-248). Note that some sources fail to list Thomas Allen Williams, who was lost with his shipmates when Dorado was sunk in October, 1943. Please note that the award of the Purple Heart for the men lost on this boat is not listed in most sources. However, we have documentary proof that at least two Dorado men, Richard Holbrook Becker and Vernon Eugene Gardner, were awarded the medal for the sacrifice of their lives on this vessel. We are looking into ways to have all men lost on Dorado recognized with the award of the Purple Heart. Please contact us if you would like to assist in this effort. Please see the recently released YouTube documentary, Details Plain Language: The Mystery and Loss of Submarine USS Dorado, for further explination of the probable cause of the loss of the boat. Click on a man's name to go to his personal memorial page on this site. Photographs and personal information are needed as indicated in the column at right. For a brief history of the boat, please see The Loss of USS Dorado.
*Award of the Purple Heart confirmed in individual personnel files in the National Archives.
