JANAC and some other sources credit this sinking to USS Snook (SS-279), but Alden says that the attack by USS Shark appears more likely.

This kind of ship carrying Allied POWs is commonly known as a "Hellship" due to the terrible living conditions aboard the vessels.

Soon after this sinking, USS Shark (SS-314) was sunk by Japanese destroyers.
