Note

In some sources, this ship is identified as "Kanko Maru" - the same name (漢江丸 in kanji) as a ship that Wahoo sank on October 6, 1943. Cressman and wrecksite give the reading of the name as Hankow Maru, while JANAC and Alden say Kanko Maru. JANAC and Cressman mistakenly list the sinking coordinates as the same as those of the "other" Kanko Maru (37-18N, 129-33E), which was sunk by Wahoo three days earlier off the Korean east coast. Both Cressman and Alden also state the sinking occured "off Oga Penninsula" (Akita Prefecture, Japan). This location is near the coordinates listed for the sinking of the second 漢江丸 on the Wahoo page of Wikipedia Japan - 39-49N, 139-46E - which references the National Archives of Japan for this data.

One Japanese source (太平洋戦争時の喪失船舶明細表) gives additional information on the sinking, listing the ship as being sunk off Funagawa, Oga Penninsula, by 空爆 (air attack). We believe that the "air attack" reference is in error, since there were no Allied aircraft in the vicinity in October, 1943. Friendly fire (i.e., the ship being sunk by Japanese aircraft believing they were bombing an American submarine) is a possibility, but we think that it is more likely that this ship was sunk by USS Wahoo.
