Andrew was born in New York, New York.

Seaman First Class Andrew G. Johnson (NSN: 8121702), United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (posthumously) for heroic conduct in assisting in the rescue of a shipmate when the USS COD's after torpedo room caught fire on 26 April 1945.

USS Cod is on display in Cleveland, Ohio.
