James Mitchell Wells

Rank/Rate Chief Machinist's Mate
Birth Date August 24, 1940
From Myrtle, Mississippi
Decorations
Submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589)
Loss Date May 22, 1968
Location Approximately 400 miles southwest of the Azores
Circumstances There is still no incontrovertible proof of the exact cause or causes of Scorpion's loss.
Remarks James' nephew, MM1(SS) Tony Allen served aboard USS Blueback (SS-581) from 1979–1982 and USS Ohio (SSBN-726) from 1982–1984, bridging the transition from diesel-electric heritage to Trident nuclear deterrence. Together, their stories embody the creed of the Silent Service: “Pride Runs Deep.” One gave the ultimate sacrifice, the other carried the torch forward. Both are forever part of the brotherhood of submariners.
